This document gives you instructions on how to install, start, and remove the FLEX software for several IBM-PC operating systems. The abbreviated instructions on the diskette only cover installation under the DOS operating system. The four operating system environments covered in this document are: 1) DOS 2) Windows 3.1 or 3.11 hosted by DOS 3) Windows 95 4) OS/2 In this document we use the convention where string is something to be entered with the keyboard. If the string entered is a command to the operating system, a Carriage Return (CR) key is assumed to be pressed after you enter the string. The convention [name] is used to identify things by literal name (like names of icons and menu items). ****************************** * Did you Download FLEX.ZIP? * ****************************** If you downloaded this program from a BBS or from the internet, you will need to make an installation diskette before you can install the program correctly. It's a good idea to make an installation diskette anyway just in case you need to reinstall, or you want to install FLEX on several computers. On the BBS, FTP site, or WWW page you should find the two files: README.TXT (introductory material) INSTALL.TXT (THIS FILE) FLEX.ZIP (pkzipped version of the following) - README.TXT (release notes, disclaimer etc...) - INSTALL.TXT (this file) - INSTALL.BAT (the installation batch file) - FLEXZIP.EXE (self extracting executable for the FLEX program) Unpack the FLEX.ZIP file onto a 1.44Mb 3.5" floppy. You will need a copy of PKUNZIP. Since you got this electronic copy, I'll assume you are savy enough to know what that is -- and how to use it. Once you have your installation diskette, log to that drive and type: where is the path where you want to install the program. See the readme.txt and the extensive context sensitive help for more instructions and help on running the program. Alternately, you can PKUNZIP the FLEX.ZIP file into a temporary directory on your hard disk and run the install batch from that directory. Once FLEX is installed, you can remove the files from the temporary directory. ************** * In General * ************** Installation of FLEX on your hard drive only adds a new directory tree, it does NOT effect any other files on your disk including your AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, or Windows INI files. ***************************** * DOS Version 3.x and later * ***************************** ->-> INSTALL <-<- 1) Put the program diskette in drive A: or B: and change the default drive to the diskette typing or . 2) Type and press the Enter key to install the software to the PATH you specify. For example, if you wanted FLEX to be installed the C:\FLEX directory type: . 3) The installation will copy all the necessary files from the diskette and create the pathname you specify along with several subdirectories for support files and sample input files. ->-> START <-<- 1) Log to the directory containing the FLEX.EXE file by typing where path is the name of your FLEX directory. If you are running the program for the first time, you may want to view the contents of the README.TXT file. This file is in simple ASCII format so you can use your favorite word processor or text editor to view this file. It contains last minute notes not found in the on-line help material. 2) Type to start the program. You can also place the FLEX directory in the PATH statement of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (i.e. PATH=C:\FLEX) and be able to start the program from any disk drive or directory on your system. 3) Use the Setup main menu in the program to specify the directory pathnames where you want the program to look for input data and where to write its results. Default data and output directories are created during installation. However, you can use this feature to locate your data and output results in any directory path. ->-> REMOVE <-<- If you want to remove the program including all of its subdirectories and files, you can use the provided REMOVE.BAT file. FLEX does not effect any files outside the directory path where you installed it, so you can be certain that the remove batch file has deleted everything. CAUTION: If you have spent any effort entering data it would be a good idea to backup your data directory first! ************************************** * Windows 3.1 or 3.11 hosted by DOS * ************************************** ->-> INSTALL <-<- If you are running Windows 3.1 or higher in 386 Extended mode, you can run FLEX from a DOS window. If you would like to install FLEX as a program item, a program information file (.PIF) and icon file (.ICO) are provided. To install FLEX as a program item: 1) Select the program group you want to install FLEX in (e.g. Double click on the [Applications] program group) 2) Choose [File/New] from the Program Manager main menu. 3) Type as the Description String; type as the command string; and type for the working directory (or whatever you labeled the directory at installation). Windows will assign a default icon and add this as a program item. 4) Chose [File/Change Properties] and press the [Change Icon] button. A message about 'no icons available' will appear ignore it and press the OK button. 5) An icon change window will appear. Type for the file name at the top of the form. The FLEX icon will be assigned. ->-> START <-<- 1) Open the program group where you have installed FLEX and double click on the FLEX icon to start the program. 2) If you have not installed FLEX into a program group, open the [Main] Windows folder and double click on the MS-DOS icon to open a full screen DOS window. Change directories to the FLEX directory and type FLEX to run the program. You should be able to use the regular and keys to navigate between FLEX and your other applications. Be sure to see the note about Windows delays. WARNING: WHEN YOU EXIT FROM FLEX AFTER A WORKING SESSION, WINDOWS MAY TAKE A LONG TIME TO RELEASE THE MEMORY ASSIGNED. THIS LONG WAIT (UP TO 1 MINUTE) MAKES IT APPEAR THAT YOUR COMPUTER HAS CRASHED. BE PATIENT AND WINDOWS WILL RETURN EVENTUALLY. WARNING: WINDOWS CAN EXHIBIT STRANGE SYMPTOMS IF THE GRAPHICS MODE USED BY A DOS-BOX APPLICATION DOES NOT MATCH THE GRAPHICS MODE USED BY WINDOWS. IF YOU WANT TO SWITCH BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN FLEX AND WINDOWS WHILE FLEX IS RUNNING, YOU MUST MATCH THE GRAPHICS MODES. FLEX USES STANDARD VGA (640X480X16 COLOR) ON STARTUP ->-> REMOVE <-<- 1) Open the MS-DOS box from the [Main] folder in the program manager. 2) Change directories to where you have installed FLEX, then type REMOVE. 3) Follow the instructions in the batch file to remove all of the FLEX files from your disk. FLEX does not place files anywhere else on the disk, so you can be sure the program has been removed. 4) If you have installed FLEX as a program item (ICON) in another program group, be sure to delete the icon by highlighting it and select [File/Delete] from the program manager main menu. *************** * Windows 95 * *************** ->-> INSTALL <-<- 1) Double click on [My Computer] icon. 2) Double click on the [Control Panel] folder. 3) Double click on the [Add/Remove Programs] icon. 4) Click the [Install] button. 5) Place the installation diskette into drive A: You must have a 1.44Mb high density disk drive as drive A: since Windows 95 only looks for installation programs on the first diskette or CD-ROM drive. 6) Windows 95 should find the A:\INSTALL.BAT file. Press the edit key on your keyboard and add the desired path name so it reads: A:\INSTALL.BAT C:\PATH where C:\PATH is the name of the disk drive and path name where you want the program installed. For example, if you want the program installed in the FLEX directory of your C drive, type 7) Press or click on [Finish] to begin installation. 8) Windows will open a DOS box and run the installation program and copy all files to the path you have specified. When the file copy stops, click on the [X] button in the upper right corner of the window to close the DOS box. 9) Close the [Control Panel] folder. ->-> START <-<- 1) From the [My Computer] icon, double click on the drive where you have installed the program. 2) You should see a folder for the program. Double click to open the folder. 3) If you are running the program for the first time, view the contents of the README.TXT file by double clicking on the [Readme] icon. 4) To start the program double click on the MS-DOS shortcut icon. ->-> REMOVE <-<- If you click and hold the FLEX folder and drag it to the recycle bin, it will automatically remove all FLEX files and directories. Switch to the A: or B: drive and type where C:\PATH is the directory path name where you want to install the program. 5) When the installation batch file is completed, close the DOS window by typing . 6) Can stop at this point, and simply run FLEX from the [DOS Full Screen] command prompt, or you can migrate the application and have OS2 assign it a program object and folder. 7) To migrate FLEX, Open the [OS/2 System] icon and double click on the [System Setup] icon. 8) Double click on the [Migrate Applications] icon. In the check box area, only check the [DOS programs] box. Then press [Find]. 9) OS/2 will look through all of your directories for programs. Click on the [Add programs] button and scan through the list of available programs (it will likely appear near the bottom of the list). 10) If you find FLEX.EXE in the list, click on it, and then click on the [Add] button (FLEX will appear in the list of selected programs on the right side of the screen. Press [Ok] to leave the [Add programs] form. 11) A folder called [Additional DOS Programs] should appear on your desk top (if you don't already have such a folder). ->-> START <-<- 1) If you have migrated the FLEX application to OS/2, simply open the [Additional DOS Programs] folder and double click on the FLEX DOS icon. 2) If you have not migrated FLEX, then double click on [OS/2 System], and open the [Command Prompts] folder.
